FDI under the automatic route is permitted for Agriculture, under controlled condition, Development and production of seeds, planting material along with services related to agro and allied sectors.

India is among the top 20 exporters of agricultural produce worldwide, agriculture exports during FY20 - INR 1.14 lakh crore/ $15.5 BN USD. The top importing countries: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, UAE, US, Iraq, and Nepal account for 46%.


Agriculture Machinery

  • • India accounts for nearly one-third of the overall tractor production, globally.
  • • India has annual exports of 92,000 units in 2019-20
  • • Level of farm mechanization in India stands at 40 % to 45% (UP, Punjab, and Haryana are high penetration states) as of 2017

Seeds

  • • Market size: USD 3.1 Bn (2018-19)
  • • Export: 14,796.11 MT of Fruits and Vegetables Seeds worth Rs. 723.43 crores/101.50 USD Millions (2019-20)
  • • Export destinations: Netherland, USA, Bangladesh, Thailand, Pakistan

AGROCHEMICALS

  • • $4.1bn market size in 2019 and is expected to double to US$8.1bn by 2025
  • • 5th-largest exporter of agrochemicals , 13th largest exporter of pesticides
  • • India is a net exporter of agrochemicals
  • • Current use of agrochemicals in the Indian market is 0.27 kg per hectare as compared to US where it is 4.58 KG per hectare

COLD CHAIN

  • • 75% of the total cold storage capacity used for storage of horticulture crops including potato
  • • More than 63% of the cold storage facilities are in UP, Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and West Bengal (majorly for potato)
  • • Ownership of Cold storage in the country:
  • - Private Sector: 95%
  • - Cooperatives: 3%
  • - Public Sector Undertakings: 2%

HORTICULTURE: FRUITS & VEGETABLES

  • • Largest producer of ginger and okra
  • • Second largest producer of potatoes, onions, cauliflowers, brinjal, cabbages
  • • Largest producer of bananas, mangoes and papayas
  • • Export: Rs. 9,182.88 crores/ 1,277.38 USD Millions
  • • Fruits - Rs. 4,832.81 crores/ 668.75 USD Mn
  • • Vegetables- Rs. 4,350.13 crores/ 608.48 USD Mn
  • • Export Destination: Bangladesh, UAE, Netherland, Nepal, Malaysia, UK, Sri Lanka, Oman and Qatar.

HORTICULTURE: FLORICULTURE

  • • Indian Floriculture - INR 130 Billion in 2017. Projected to reach INR 394 Billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 20% during 2018-2023
  • • Area was under Cultivation in floriculture - 249 thousand hectares (2015-16)
  • • Export : 16,949.37 MT worth Rs. 541.61 Crores/75.89 USD Mn
  • • Export Destinations : USA, Netherland, Germany, UK, UAE
  • • 300 export-oriented units in India
